Both our kids have been (and still are) excellent sleepers – and this is how we did it!
Baby Got Colic for fussy babies
This white noise works like magic! Download the full hour here:

No joke, any fussing baby who hears this calms almost instantly.
Pacifiers
If you are choosing to give your baby a pacifier, you may need to try all the brands before you find one that your baby will like. Trust me – it is worth the time, money, and effort! Wubbanub pacifiers also do not fall out as easily as others and are good to have on hand. And as someone who took (way too) long to stop sucking on my fingers, I recommend a pacifier over allowing finger or thumb sucking any day!
Blackout curtains
These allow your baby to sleep well during the day and night, and also lets you pick and stick to a good bed time whether it is daylight savings time or not.
White noise
White noise every time they sleep helps them not wake up from loud noises (so you don’t have to tip toe around!) and teaches them to be able to sleep anywhere when you play white noise.
Learning how children sleep
The MBSG Sleep Averages by Age document really helped me: https://docs.google.com/document/u/1/d/1jb4Q2UtbUA7Nk_sfPfGo8zPFuFNw41NhWFMcqGgHPFI/mobilebasic?pli=1&usp=gmail
We also used the “2, 3, 4” baby nap schedule after 6 months and always had a strict bed time that allowed for the ideal amount of sleep (according to the document above). We also chose to sleep train when I was ready to stop that last feeding in the middle of the night and our kids have been great sleepers ever since!
